Silk Flower Arrangements for the Elderly
I recently have taken up some volunteer work with the elderly in my area and learned the importance of silk flower arrangements. After visiting two ladies in their homes I started noticing how stark their surrounding were. I asked one lady if she would enjoy a plant or a bouquet of fresh flowers. Although she told me she would love both, she explained that she would have problems with the caring and upkeep of anything live.
When I stopped to think about it I understood. Plants require watering, pruning, feeding, even a bouquet of flowers need tending, if you want them to last.
These ladies had difficulty with mobility and pain. They really didn't need something else to take care of in their lives.
Based on this I decided to make both of them silk flower arrangements using their favorite flowers and greenery. One of the silk flower arrangements primarily had tulips as one had a Dutch heritage. The other consisted of hydrangea and roses. I picked up inexpensive vases and had a couple of my friends help me with the silk flower arrangements themselves.
I will remember forever the delight on the ladies faces as we presented each with their silk flower arrangements. They became a focal point in the room and made each day a little brighter.
